In so doing, the repairs will be done in a more comprehensive manner. A socket wrench will be required for this exercise. It is used to remove the bolts that attach the rails to the table.

After the rails have been removed, the next thing is to remove the staples attaching the felt to the table. The best tool would be a staple puller but a screwdriver may also be used. The screwdriver needs to have a head that is flat. The removed staples should be kept carefully on the side because they may cause injury if one steps on them. They may also be misplaced.

The extent of the cracks is known through inspection of the slate. Beeswax will suffice to fill the fine cracks and small chips. It should be held above the crack, some 4 inches, as the wax is melted. The melting is done using a portable propane torch. The wax is left to drip into the cracks.

Slate normally requires a lot of wax to bond effectively. After the wax has cooled well, a paint scraper is used to remove any excess wax. The excess wax needs to be removed because it will lead to the slate having an unpleasant appearance. The wax should also be placed carefully and in the right amounts so that it dries up and fills the cracks more effectively.

There is the option of using billiard table wax. This contains resin that hardens in a better way than beeswax and gives more durable results. If the cracks are big, then billiards wax will be the better option. After the application is completed and the excess wax is scraped, the slate is wiped with a damp sponge or cloth. Billiard table wax will also be effective when one has to seal loose seams on the slate.

For even more extensive cracks, slate repair glue is used. It is thick and consistent, features that make it able to effectively bond slate. The glue is applied inside the cracks on both sides. The separate sides are then firmly pushed together. For the glue to bond the separate slate pieces, they are held together for some time.

Because of the pressure of the slate being pushed together, some glue may seep out. The glue should be left to dry up. After that, it is smoothed down using sandpaper. After repairs are complete, the felt is returned to position.
